MADDALENA

Chestnut wood, white Carrara marble, Belgian black marble.

Morioka, Japan 2018.

Created during a study period in Japan under the guidance of master Osamu Waragai, Maddalena was born from a mutual portrait between two friends.

The work adopts an ancient Japanese technique involving the insertion of glass eyes, capable of bringing life into the material.

The face, carved in chestnut wood and hand-painted, retains its materiality, allowing the living presence of the gaze to emerge from the marble eyes.

The portrait becomes a space of exchange, a reflection on identity. In this piece, embodied memory and shared memory influence one another in a suspended time.
